All the details at 22 weeks
It is the 22 week detail scan. The scan that we have been waiting for. And not to give any discredit to our gynae, but this scan is just something extraordinary and we couldn’t wait for this day to come.
Our appointment was at 09:30 and of course, in true Verran style, we are on time and ready to go. It was a beautiful day in Cape Town, despite the wind, but we were ready. Bridgitte was very nervous because this is the scan where they look at the heart, bones, brain and all the other organs to see if they are on the right places and functioning correctly.
Just after I had updated Twitter, we got called in. Bridgitte made herself comfortable on the bed with the super cool ultrasound machine next to her on the right and I, with my popcorn and coke, settled in front of the TV in the corner for my share of the action. (and no, I didn’t really have popcorn and coke).
She went through all the organs and for me, the most fascinating, was the heart functions. All the valves and pumping action was just a showstopper for me! Awesome stuff and it was great to see that the heart is doing great. One thing that did piss me off however, is that all that was not included in the DVD that she gave us. I don’t know what the deal is, but that is the part I really wanted to see. Can somebody PLEASE give me an idea why she would exclude this footage? I guess a phone call to ask her would solve that question ‘eh?
But, the next step was the brain. She measured certain areas of the brain which determine Downs syndrome as well as other disorders – all was good. Then she went on to measure everything else from checking the spinal cord, toes feet, hands, arms, bones, checking for the lungs, kidneys, liver, bladder, stomach, the cleft, and even Bridgitte’s blood flow to the uterus and many more. It was a fascinating session indeed and it is something that all pregnant couples should opt for.
Here is the video of the session.
We stepped out there with our photos and DVD in hand with HUGE smiles on our faces. That nervousness that Bridgitte had was gone in a heartbeat, our baby boy was doing fine.
After leaving the hospital, we headed over to a baby store called “Bumps and Daisies”. They are agents for the company who we are going to use for our nursery furniture. We stepped in and went right to the back of the store where all the furniture was on display. It just reaffirmed our decision to go with them – the draws / compactum and cot was perfect. Late April, the order will be placed.
As for our progress on our nursery, slowly, but surely, we’re moving stuff in and out and de-cluttering like mad. We managed to get hold of an office cupboard which is now in the garage containing all our files and Bridgitte’s teaching material and so swapped the shelves around that were in the dining room and nursery-to-be. De-cluttering is seriously going well with so many stuff that we’ve thrown away and re-organized.
Somehow Bridgitte will never get me to get rid of my box of wires. hehehehe
